Academies are publicly funded, independently governed schools. Each academy has a sponsor, in this case ARK Schools, which has a master funding agreement with the Secretary of State for Education. Each of ARK’s academies also has an individual supplementary funding agreement.
Burlington Danes Academy is operated by ARK Schools, a charitable company incorporated to oversee the academies it sponsors.
Burlington Danes Academy is a Church of England school which welcomes pupils of every religion or none. The academy maintains a Christian ethos. ARK Schools works closely with the London Diocesan Board for Schools which appoints two members to the governing body.
The ARK Schools board is the legally responsible governing body for all academies in the network. In practice, the ARK Schools board delegates most relevant governance functions to Burlington Danes Academy’s Local Governing Body (LGB). This means that, unlike most maintained governing bodies, the LGB has no statutory responsibilities. This allows governors to concentrate on educational strategy, school outcomes and aspiration.
Burlington Danes Academy’s LGB is made up as follows:
Governors are appointed/elected for two-year terms, up to a maximum of ten years. The initial term of the first Chair will be three years, with annual election by the LGB thereafter. Academy staff may not be Chair or Vice Chair of the LGB.
ARK Schools aims to create a balanced group that will have the right skills, connections and dynamic for the LGB to work well and support the school in achieving exceptional performance:
