How do single parent families affect children's behaviour?

We’ve all heard the negative comments on single parent families, but, how much does it affect the children? It has been proven that children who grow up with only one parent are more likely to be classed as problematic children. But, there are always two sides to a story. An unnamed source has claimed that children who are brought up in single parent families are just as likely to succeed as children brought up in the average family. “Children of single parents can be as healthy and emotionally secure as those from traditional families,” our source states.

Some people believe that children that come from “broken homes” can have psychological issues but what about the others? What do they think?

Student, Ondraya, who was brought up by her mother, believes that children who are brought up with single parents have the same chance of achieving as children with both a mother and a father. “I think that children who are brought up by a single parent can be just as successful. Especially, if they have a strong support system surrounding them and the parent that they are being brought up by are able to guide them into the right direction.”

Jane, 41, believes it is a stronger unit if the parents are together and supporting the child. “Without two parents, the children are unable to develop their personalities fully as they don’t have both male and female opinions on certain topics. Two parents are always better than one.”
