Turkish earthquake
There has been an earthquake in Turkey that had a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale. This devastating event has killed 51 and devastated many more in the country. The prime minister has ordered architectural reconstruction on the buildings such as, homes, schools, banks and multimillionaire corporations.
The Prime Minister blamed the level of injuries on mud-brick buildings used in the area. The survivors of the earthquake have been congregating around fires in cold temperatures, as rescue teams give out food. The earthquake toppled buildings in five villages. The event was the worst in the village of Okcular, where 15 people or more lost their lives. A man around the area said he had ordered the start of a reconstruction project in the area. He was speaking amid calls for Turkey to learn lessons from the quake, which commentators said would not have caused such a high toll in other earthquake-prone countries such as Japan.
A Turkish boy called Mohammed was asked how the earthquake affected him. He said, “Basically I was sleeping with my sister and I felt a sudden shake in the ground and I fell off my bed, then I saw buildings starting to fall through my window so I alerted my family. We took the quickest escape route and went to the middle of the park where it was safe. We set up a small shanty by the tree and used a bin for a fire place. We have been here since due to after shocks.”
